Then there was the romantic classical aspect as shown in her. Critical reaction to the album is generally positive but varies. On the one hand, you had her wild (and wildly successful) projects like Escalator Over the Hill and Tropic Appetites, where styles and musicians were combined with inspired abandon. But this is basically desultory, hinting at the feckless formalism an obsession with textures so often conceals. Around 1980, Carla Bley seemed to find herself torn between several possible avenues of expression. Robert Christgau commented, "I'm still attracted to Bley's humor, best displayed here in the title piece, a wry take on the charms and imperfections of the mechanical mode.
